Scanner setup

Configure a keyboard-wedge barcode or QR scanner and fix common terminator and focus problems.

Serial Trail works with keyboard-wedge scanners: the device types the serial into the focused field and sends Enter. No vendor driver or browser extension is required.

  1. Set the scanner to USB HID keyboard mode.
  2. Configure an Enter/Carriage Return suffix after each scan.
  3. Disable prefixes unless they are part of every stored serial.
  4. Match the scanner keyboard locale to the workstation.
  5. Test in Serials → Scan → Find before starting an assignment session.

The scan does nothing

Click the scan field and try again. If characters appear but the lookup does not run, enable the Enter suffix in the scanner manual. If nothing appears, test the device in a plain text editor to separate hardware configuration from the app.

The serial is not found

Search the registry manually. Confirm that the barcode contains the actual serial, not a product SKU, GTIN, or URL. Serial comparison ignores letter casing but preserves the display form.

Characters are wrong

Check keyboard locale and symbology settings. Dashes, slashes, and shifted characters commonly change when the scanner and operating system use different layouts.

Assignment is refused

The result banner distinguishes a voided or already-assigned unit, a full fulfillment slot, a missing serial, and a cross-variant pick requiring confirmation. Follow that specific action instead of scanning repeatedly.

💡
Keep one browser tab and one active scan session per packing station to prevent operators from assigning into the wrong context.
