Auto-assign and the fulfillment queue

See how Serial Trail chooses a pool, handles shortages, and lets operators finish a line safely.

When a covered order line is fulfilled, Serial Trail claims available serials and records their real lifecycle path. A shortage never blocks Shopify fulfillment; it becomes an actionable queue state.

Pool resolution

Serial Trail looks for active pools in this order:

  1. Exact variant binding.
  2. Product binding when no variant pool can cover the line.

Within a pool, the oldest Available unit is claimed first. This FIFO rule is deterministic and safe under concurrent fulfillments.

Queue statuses

Status Meaning What to do
Pending Waiting for assignment Assign manually or run auto-assign
Partially assigned Some units are attached Add the remaining units
Assigned The line is fully covered No action needed
Not covered No pool covers the variant Create or bind a pool
Exhausted A covering pool ran out Add units, then assign

Manual correction

Open a line to select specific Available units. Cross-variant assignment requires explicit confirmation. Unassign returns a unit to Available and records the reversal; it never deletes history.

⚠️
Demo fulfillment lines only accept demo serials. Real and sample data cannot be mixed.
