Add the check page to your theme menu
Add the generated serial-check URL to Shopify navigation and verify it in the active theme.
After Public Lookup is enabled, add its generated storefront URL to a Shopify menu so buyers can find it without exposing an internal app route.
What you'll accomplish
- Add the signed app-proxy page to an existing Shopify menu.
- Choose clear buyer-facing link text.
- Verify navigation, theme contrast, focus, and public lookup states.
Requirements
- Complete Enable the storefront serial check first.
- Copy the exact storefront URL shown in Settings → Public Lookup.
- Have permission to edit Shopify Online Store navigation.
Shopify can customize an app-proxy prefix or subpath. The default is /apps/serial-check, but the generated URL in Settings is the source of truth.
Add the menu item
- In Serial Trail, open Settings → Public Lookup and select Copy link.
- In Shopify admin, open Content → Menus. Some admin versions label this Online Store → Navigation.
- Open the menu where buyers expect post-purchase support links, usually the footer or customer-support menu.
- Add a menu item with a clear label such as Check product serial.
- Paste the complete storefront URL from Serial Trail.
- Save the menu.
- Open the live storefront in a private browser session and select the new link.
Do not link to /merchant, /settings, or /storefront/proxy/serials. Those are internal application paths, not the buyer-facing Shopify URL.
Verify the active theme
Check the page at minimum on a 360 × 640 phone, 390 × 844 phone, 768 × 1024 tablet, and desktop:
- The menu link is visible and keyboard focus is clear.
- Text and fields meet contrast expectations in light and dark themes.
- The serial field, submit action, result, and merchant contact fit without horizontal scrolling.
- A synthetic genuine serial and an unknown value render the correct privacy-safe results.
What success looks like
- The menu item opens the generated Shopify storefront URL.
- No authentication or merchant dashboard is exposed.
- The page inherits the active theme without unreadable text or controls.
- Buyers can complete a lookup with keyboard-only navigation.
- Disabling Public Lookup produces a neutral unavailable page at the same menu URL.
Troubleshooting
The menu link returns 404
Symptom: Shopify cannot find the page.
Likely cause: The default path was typed manually, the app-proxy path was customized, or the store needs reconnection.
Fix: Replace the menu destination with the current URL copied from Serial Trail Settings, then reconnect the store if prompted.
Confirm: The link opens from the published storefront, not only from the theme editor.
The page is unreadable in a dark theme
Symptom: Text or controls have insufficient contrast.
Likely cause: Theme color inheritance conflicts with the app-proxy surface.
Fix: Record the theme name, affected element, and screenshots in light and dark mode, then contact support. Do not add unreviewed global CSS to the theme.
Confirm: Text, focus, form controls, and results remain readable at all required widths.
The link opens the merchant dashboard
Symptom: Buyers see a login or embedded-app route.
Likely cause: An internal Serial Trail URL was pasted instead of the storefront URL.
Fix: Copy Storefront URL from Public Lookup settings and replace the menu destination.
Confirm: A signed-out private browser can open the lookup page.
